About us

There are many High School Holiday Tournaments in the State of Illinois, but none
as old and continuous as the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament. The tournament
was started in 1928 by NIU’s Varsity Club members. in 1942, Chuck Dayton came
to DeKalb High School and later became DeKalb’s first Athletic Director. Chuck
Dayton was involved in the Holiday Tournament for 30 years, and was probably
the one most important force in the success of the DeKalb Holiday Tournament.
“Chuck” has influenced the lives of many young men in his teaching and coaching
career, and we are eternally grateful for his assistance and leadership. Mr. Dayton
retired in 1971 after 37 years in education and coaching. After retirement, Chuck
attended all of the Holiday Tournaments until he passed away in 1998. Because
of his dedication and support to the Tournament, this Holiday Tournament will
forever be known as the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament
